at participating gm dealers. president obama's speech last night was more than 5,600 words long and took about 50 minutes to deliver. two words shouted during the speech by someone else and the apologies and comments that followed are being what's talked about today. >> you lie! >> totally disrespectful. for place for it in that setting or any other and he should apologize immediately. >> it was stunning to hear such a statement made on the floor of the house when the president of the united states is speaking. >> last night i heard from the leadership that they wanted me to contact the white house and say that my statements were inappropriate. i did. >> do you accept wilson's
7:37 pm
apology? >> doi do. we all make mistakes. he apologized quickly and without equivocation and i'm appreciative of that. >> it's the level of national discourse was the loser last night, there was one winner and it's congressman wilson's democratic opponent. miller raised more than $400,000 since wilson's remarks last night. joining me now is a columnist for "salon" and new york bureau chief for "the washington post" joins us and also ron christi. thank you for joining us. let's start with the joe wilson controversy. keith? >> it's not a good time for south carolina politicians, is it? i have to apologize. both my parents came from the state. you know, it is funny that that became the thing that everyone is talking about the next day. there could have been things in the speech they were talking about like how to pay for this?
7:38 pm
once again, the opposition is the best friend that obama has in some of this stuff because by always going over the top and doing something completely shwill like that, the republicans step on what they want their message to be. >> let's talk about the topic being discussed at that moment which is the white house says illegal immigrants will not be covered. ron, thoughts on this whole incident? >> i think it's unfortunate. i think you heard from senator mccain and others in the republican leadership that says there's no place for that level of discourse on the floor of the house of representatives. i think that's right. i don't think we should overblow this either. i think that joe wilson is one member of congress. there are 535 members of the house and senate and one individual's actions doesn't speak for an entire party. for that matter, you can look and say that wilson immediately owned up to what he had done. he called white house chief of staff rahm emanuel and admitted he was wrong. the president accepted that
7:39 pm
apology. let's move on. we can say that charlie rangel, democrats brushed his tax issues away and said let's not talk about that. you need to look at the speech and topic at hand which was health care. >> all right. joe? >> look, wilson has brought a problem on himself which is that now the constituents in his district in south carolina will have a better opportunity to judge whether he's fit to serve in congress anymore because his opponent has raised a lot of money overnight having $16,000 in the bank before and now is closing in on half a million. may be able to be a competitive candidate and that's the way it should be. >> go ahead, keith. >> the problem was he did apologize but he repeated the thing that we now know is untrue. fact check has looked at this. illegal immigrants would not be covered. it can't be clearer. >> let's go to the substance of this. go ahead, ron. >> that's not true at all.
7:40 pm
if luke at the congressional budget office that said there is not a specific provision in there that says that illegal aliens could not be covered. what republicans have tried to do and what republicans were voted down on party line were amendments that said let's specifically state we will not allow people in this country illegal tlly to receive money f th this bill. >> it says that. listen to what john mccain said. he said in that interview, it is not there. it's not there. it's fake. even if his apology, wilson repeated it. >> in any case, if joe wilson or any other member of congress has a problem with the language of the bill, what they need to do is change their attitude about the entire health care package and start to introduce amendments that are constructive rather than scream out while the president is speaking in congress. that is a sign of their frustration perhaps but it
7:41 pm
doesn't do anything. >> a fair comment. joe, i wanted to ask you, you have written a number of columns that obama has a strategy that ranks bipartisan agreement above policy substance. what are you talking about there? flush that out for us a bit. >> what i said is there were signs of that from comments coming from white house staff basically saying we're going to throw over the public option because we need to -- we want to get one republican vote in the senate. they know they're not going to get any republican votes in the house practically. they want to get one republican and one senate. there were some democrats that didn't want to vote for a bill done through reconciliation with no republican votes. we can't have the bill the president originally wanted because we have to get republican. that's what that met. whether there's a sound strategy or not remains to be seen. so far it has not worked. originally they hoped to get several republicans. now they're down to one they think they may get. i think they're going to end up
7:42 pm
having a democratic bill. >> all right. we'll getting to that in a second. another controversy also surrounding the left wing activist group acorn. this one is caught on tape. stay with us for that. a smidge? y'know, there's really no need to weigh packages under 70 pounds. with priority mail flat rate boxes from the postal service, if it fits, it ships anywhere in the country for a low flat rate. cool. you know this scale is off by a good 7, 8 pounds. maybe five. priority mail flat rate boxes only from the postal service. a simpler way to ship.
7:43 pm
7:44 pm
there's a new controversy tonight for the left wing activist group acorn. the group has fired two employees who were caught on tape allegedly giving tax avoidance advice to a couple posing as a pimp and a prostitute. this videotape made by an independent filmmaker shows the workers allegedly telling the couple how to obtain loans for a brothel and how to obtain tax
7:45 pm
credit for illegal immigrants work as prostitutes. this is not the first time the federally funded organization has come under fire. bill tucker joins us now with more. >> thank you very much. as you mentioned, there's a swirl of controversy this evening because of two filmmakers. two conservative activist filmmakers who went in the baltimore office of acorn posing as a pimp and a prostitute. they went in seeking advice on how to establish their business and how to run their business and they received it beginning with some tax advice from one of the officials at the acorn office in baltimore. >> he didn't stop saying prostitution. he went on to say there was a complicating factor because what they were interested in doing as
7:46 pm
well is bringing in young girls from el salvador and using them as underage prostitutes in business they would run out of house. instead of being told to leave the office, they received further advice from the people at acorn. >> there are problems with the videotape in that we should point out that the tape presented on the internet is blacked out. we can't see all of the conversations nor everything that has happened. we put phone calls into law enforcement agencies in maryland to ask if there was an ongoing investigation or a new investigation. they confirm neither but they did tell us at cnn that there could be problems with the evidence as it was gathered because maryland is a two-party
7:47 pm
state meaning secretly videotaped evidence would not be admissible into court but again we do not know whether there is an investigation going on. we are informed as you reported that two employees have been fired by the maryland office. we've been trying to reach that maryland office. their voice mailbox as you might suspect is full. they're not answering phone calls nor are they returning any phone calls. i do also want to mention that we did ask the filmmakers for interviews. mr. o'keefe was not available today. the young woman that played the prostitute in that interview was supposed to be here but sent us a text message saying, sorry, i can't do it. we don't know if in fact they have tried other acorn offices. the statement we received from acorn today from the national spokesman was straightforward. he called this an example of
7:48 pm
gotcha journalism and noted they tried to do this in other offices at acorn and failed to do so and that they want to see the full video before they make further comment. the other offices they told me were in new york, philadelphia, and los angeles. we have no confirmation of that nor do we have any reason to not believe the acorn spokesman. >> all right. thanks very much, bill tucker. a lot of reporting there. >> on this note, let's start with this controversy, keith, of what do you make of this discussion? >> it's another embarrassment for acorn. the only reason they're on the radar screen is because they became well known -- most people never heard of acorn two years ago. they became well known because they were helping get out the vote efforts for the obama campaign. it's an embarrassment for acorn. i don't know if it will go beyond that i would be interested if that is true what the spokesman said that the conservative filmmaker went
7:49 pm
around to three or four offices and were thrown out and found one office where they were given silly advice. it sounds like entrapment. let's go to various offices before we can entrap someone. >> it's not journalism until they report all that happened. it's propaganda. if you're a reporter doing this, you would report, yes, we went to the four offices and one said, you know, fell for -- took the bait. if you don't report that and if you act as if you went into one office and bait. and if they did t. that's dishonest. the other thing is, bill mentioned it's a two party state the film makers could be liable for civil action for taping people without telling them in the state of maryland. i have a reporter who works in the capital district that knows about this. it came up in the linda tripp affair whether she could be recording monica lewinsky.
7:50 pm
that may be why the film maker did not show up and discuss this tonight. >> ron, thoughts about this whole issue? >> i think it underscores, kitty, the reason why there should be a federal investigation into a.c.o.r.n. there have a been of a number of cases with acorn over the years, allegations of illegally registering somebody to vote. i think there should be an investigation. mark levin has been on this for years. the silence has been deaf fening. and, again, people -- >> you should present the evidence to the justice department if you have evidence of a federal crime. this is a lot of vague stuff. >> excuse me. i didn't cut you off. it's not me. it's for those in the federal government looking at whether or not the federal elections have been tampered with. i think that's a serious enough allegation and i think it would
7:51 pm
be warranted, rather than some of the frivolous cases that the justice department seems to be pursing on partisan lines. >> congressman keith king has called for an investigation on this. this is a political issue, isn't it? >> this group in baltimore, the two people maryland state law, go to maryland state authorities. now in terms of election fraud, look, there have been the election fraud allegations going on back and forth with allegations that black voters were kicked off the rolls on florida, voters were disenchanted -- >> the fact that they name a.c.o.r.n. in both of these cases, i mean, even yourself, does that have any political ramification? >> i think if there is evidence that there was some fraud committed, sure, the justice department should be looking at that, as they should look at all of these fraud investigations that happened as we look at the
7:52 pm
other cases that we've had. >> usually it's a state law. if people are permitting election fraud in a state, that state needs to investigate it and the attorney general needs to have the power to prosecute that. so if a.c.o.r.n. committed a prosecuted evidence of that to the property authorities in those states and they should do something about it. and they have not one, one case against a.c.o.r.n. for election fraud. >> ron, you get the last word on this. >> and ron christie was saying the justice department -- >> excuse me, joe, where they seem to be pursing things on partisan issues. if you look at the case dealing with the new black panther party, they had him on tape and eric holder, the attorney general, said that he did not want to prosecute the case.
7:53 pm
i think before the law it should be what is right and wrong and not what is black and white. it seems to me that obama's further allegations of racism and -- >> ron, i'm so sorry. we've got to cut it off here. quite an interesting discussion. keith, we'll take you another joe and ron and keith. coming up at the top of the hour, campbell brown. campbell? >> breaking news about the swine flu. new information about how many shots you will have to get. also, i'll ask best selling author what parents should make of researchers finding that that six--month-old babies already judge each other based on the color of their skin. and a question you've brought up, can our politicians get past the lies, the disportion, and just plain moodness and have a national debate about health care? >> thanks very much.

always be careful of an open microphone. it's what poll significances frequently forget. the open mike is a boostful california congressman with a habit discussing nonlegislative subjects. casey wian has our report. >> reporter: when will they learn? state lawmaker mike duvall was captured by an open microphone bragging to a colleague about his alleged sexual ex ploits with a lobbyist. much of the tales are too graphic for television. the married father of two
